The Avance 500 spectrometer was installed in 2003. This high performance spectrometer operates by default in automation with a BBFO SmartProbe under ICON-NMR software control. Alternatively, researchers can reserve the spectrometer for more sohpisticated experiments, to study reactive samples, to perform variable temperature experiments, or to use the inverse probehead. The spectrometer is controlled by Bruker's TopSpin software (Version 2.1, patchlevel 8) .
